The next generation of young golfers in Derbyshire attended a special presentation night for the Derbyshire Golf Futures Tour and Junior Order of Merit at Matlock Golf Club.

Winners were presented with their prizes by the Derbyshire County Ladies Golf Association president Fay Warner and Derbyshire Union President John Outram.

The Derbyshire Golf Futures Tour is aimed at girls and boys under the age of 16.

Those taking part do not need to be a member of a golf club. Each competitor plays nine holes off scratch with points scored at the Tour's events in July and August counting towards an Order of Merit which determines who takes part in the September final.

Each player is accompanied by a parent or guardian at the events.

Nigel Furniss, county development officer for the Derbyshire Golf Partnership, said:  "The Futures Tour is another of our programmes designed to give young golfers a taste of competitive action on different courses against players of similar age and ability.

"It is a great project, and we are really fortunate to have Victoria Riley running the event. The presentation evening was a huge success with more than 100 people in attendance.

To see these young players, some under eight years of age, coming forward to collect their prizes was fantastic. These young players will become future county players and that means the future looks bright for Derbyshire Golf."

The prize winners of the Derbyshire Golf Junior Order of Merit, supported by Bridgestone Golf, were also present. The Junior Order of Merit gives young players in the county who have CONGU handicaps the opportunity to compete in a series of Junior Opens and accumulate points based on their performances towards the Order of Merit.

Seventeen clubs participated during 2011 and results from the Derbyshire Girls and Derbyshire Boys Championships were also included in the Order of Merit.

"The Junior Order of Merit is providing a competitive platform for young golfers in the county to compare their skills and for county selectors to use when naming coaching squads.

The Derbyshire Futures Tour and the Derbyshire Golf Junior Order of Merit are initiatives aimed at providing a pathway for young golfers run under the umbrella of the Derbyshire Golf Partnership.

This is a collaboration of a number of stakeholders in the sport including the English Golf Union, The English Women's Golf Association, the PGA, the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

In Derbyshire the partnership is supported by the Derbyshire Ladies County Golf Association, the Derbyshire Union of Golf Clubs and the Derbyshire PGA.
