Easter weekend sees the opening of the new 'Spirit of the Forties Collection' in Bakewell on Good Friday and the return of Crich Tramway Village's 1940s weekend on Easter Sunday and Monday.
Bakewell Old House Museum are branching out this year with a brand new exhibition which opens for the first time on Good Friday, April the 6th. The Spirit of the Forties Collection brings together images and artefacts from the first half of the twentieth century including both the Home Front and Battlefront. Visitors will be particularly welcome to share their memories and, perhaps, have them included in the exhibition.
The new attraction will be open from Friday to Monday until November with admission prices at £2 for adults and 50p for children. Visitors will also be able to buy a discounted ticket to the main Old House Museum from the Spirit of the Forties collection. It opens at 10.30 am on Good Friday, situated just off Matlock Street in Bakewell town centre.
Re-enactors can also look forward to the return of Crich Tramway Village's very popular 40s weekend on Easter Sunday and Monday, where you can expect air-raid warnings, the sound of low flying aircraft and you'll need your identity card for a real taste of life during the Second World War as Crich Tramway Village hold the first of their large 1940s re-enactment weekends of 2012.
Policemen and members of the Home Guard will be patrolling the period streets and visitors must always be ready to show their identity card or risk being arrested as a spy! Beware the spivs selling black market goods and watch out for unexploded bombs. However, the trusty ARP will be on hand to deal with any incidents including the incendiary bombs. The Red Lion public house will be serving drinks and wartime styled meals.
Historic wartime road vehicles will be on show and on the move, mingling with a range of vintage trams which visitors will be able to ride on as often as they like and wartime songs will be belted out by an authentic concert party throughout the weekend.
Anyone in 1940s period dress will receive discounted entry to the event and there will be free entry for serving Armed Forces Personnel and their partners on production of an identity card. HM Forces Veterans (any era) are also admitted free of charge when pre-booked.
